Laron Williamson, a registered student with the Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities (JCPD), received a laptop to aid his next stage of education and training to become an Information Technology teacher. The laptop was presented to Williamson by Digicel Foundation CEO, Charmaine Daniels along with Jacqueline Bennet, acting Executive Director at JCPD.
During the previous school year, Williamson was the first student to receive a tablet from the Digicel Jamaica Foundation as part of the organisation’s Operation SAFE Mode COVID campaign. Williamson showed impressive academic achievements during the last school year as well. Daniels challenged him to achieve an A average during the 2020-2021 school year. His reward for outstanding performance this year was the laptop.
Daniels spoke on the Foundation’s mission to help students in these challenging times stating, “We knew right from the beginning that COVID would present a challenge for our students. We can only begin to imagine how hard it is to stay motivated as a student with the constant changes, the move to virtual learning and challenges with connectivity.” Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Digicel Jamaica Foundation has donated over 2,000 tablets, SIM cards and data plans to aid students with their education.
