Digicel Trinidad and Tobago & World Telecommunication and Information Society Day
On 17 May 2021, Digicel Trinidad and Tobago celebrated World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD). WTISD is a United Nations initiative that helps to raise awareness about the impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) on communities in the developing world.
Speaking of Digicel’s impact in Trinidad and Tobago, Digicel T&T CEO Abraham Smith said,
“This year Digicel celebrates 15 years in Trinidad and Tobago and we’re proud to have transformed the telecommunications market, making access to ICT widely available and more affordable. Customers rely on telecommunications to improve their personal lives and businesses, and we’re proud to contribute to their success. These relationships truly make us better together.”
Throughout Digicel Trinidad and Tobago’s history, the company has focused on giving back to the communities it serves and expanding connectivity. Through the pandemic, the Digicel Foundation has focused its efforts on bridging the digital divide and making distance learning feasible. The Foundation donated over 1,900 tablets and related devices to over 65 schools across the country, including free fibre broadband service and more.
Digicel is committed to working with all stakeholders both private sector and government to help identify Trinidad and Tobago’s biggest connectivity challenges and to help tackle them with major investments in infrastructure. Providing connection to underserved communities in rural areas is the ongoing goal, ensuring that Trinidad and Tobago residents have the access they need to participate in the benefits of technological advances.
